Airstream door locks are notorious for creeping toward the locked position every time the door opens and closes, until one day you're locked out. The Gear Pin hooks over the lock lever and holds it out of the way, the same job a landing gear safety pin does in the cockpit: keep something from moving when it shouldn't.
